In 1981, Serengeti was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, further cementing its global significance.
The Serengeti is renowned for its extraordinary concentration of savanna-dwelling wildlife, including the awe-inspiring Great Migration, where approximately 1.5 million wildebeest, along with zebras and other species, traverse its vast plains. This annual journey is one of nature’s most spectacular events. Serengeti is home to 30 species of grazers, such as African buffalo, giraffe, Thomson’s gazelle, Grant’s gazelle, topi, warthog, hippopotamus, and hartebeest, as well as a small population of the critically endangered black rhinoceros.
Carnivores are well-represented with 13 large predator species, including lions, leopards, cheetahs, spotted hyenas, jackals, and crocodiles. The rare African wild dog can also be found in the park, though sightings are rare. Serengeti offers walking safaris of the highest standard, allowing for an intimate exploration of this extraordinary landscape. Safari options vary by lodge.

Mahale Mountains
Mahale Mountains National Park, located in western Tanzania along the shores of Lake Tanganyika, spans an impressive 4,471 square kilometres. Established as a national park in 1985, it is home to Mount Nkungwe, the highest peak in the park, standing at 2,460 metres.
The park is renowned for harbouring one of Africa’s last remaining wild chimpanzee populations, estimated at around 800 individuals. In addition to its famous chimpanzees, Mahale boasts a remarkable diversity of wildlife adapted to its various habitats. Visitors may encounter porcupines, mongooses, small antelopes, lions, zebras, warthogs, giraffes, roan antelopes, sable antelopes, and Lichtenstein’s hartebeest.
Bird enthusiasts will be thrilled to know that Mahale is a haven for avian life, with 355 bird species recorded so far. Greystoke Mahale

Greystoke Mahale is a one-of-a-kind safari lodge, idyllically set on a pristine white sand beach along the remote shores of Lake Tanganyika, within the enchanting Mahale Mountains National Park. Accessible only by water, the journey to this hidden gem is an adventure in itself, setting the tone for an exclusive and unforgettable experience.
The lodge’s six bandas (suites) offer unmatched privacy, nestled at the edge of the rainforest. These open-air retreats, enclosed by heavy curtains draped between wooden pillars, strike the perfect balance between cool comfort and practicality. Crafted from natural materials and earthy tones, the bandas evoke the charm of a Robinson Crusoe fantasy. Each banda features a spacious interior that flows seamlessly onto a large wooden deck with sun loungers, ideal for taking in the serene surroundings. Families will appreciate the special two-storey banda, thoughtfully designed with extra beds for added comfort and space.
Evenings begin at the beachfront bar, where pre-dinner cocktails are enjoyed as the sun sets over the lake. For an afternoon adventure, take a ride on Greystoke Mahale’s dhow — a traditional sailing vessel — to swim in the cool, deeper waters of Lake Tanganyika. While the inviting beach may tempt you, swimming directly from the shore is discouraged due to the presence of hippos and crocodiles in the shallows.
The highlight of any Greystoke Mahale stay is the extraordinary chimpanzee safari. Guided by seasoned experts, you’ll trek through the lush rainforest to observe these remarkable primates in their natural habitat. During cooler months, the chimpanzees may even venture close to the lodge, creating a truly magical and intimate encounter that’s impossible to forget.
