Add to that their playful and awe-inspiring displays, and the wonder becomes unparalleled. This is precisely what whale watching in Hermanus is all about! Here, you’ll encounter these graceful, genial giants measuring 14-18 meters and weighing 40-80 tons — all from the shore. Treat yourself to a journey to Hermanus and its legendary “Cliff Path,” where you can marvel as these titans leap their entire length out of the water before crashing back down with the world’s largest splash.
Hermanus is located in the unique and captivating Walker Bay area, surrounded by magnificent mountains, endless white beaches, and the majestic Atlantic Ocean. Known worldwide for its breathtaking natural beauty, Hermanus is celebrated as the best place in the world for land-based whale watching. During whale season, which runs from June to early December, you can encounter Southern Right Whales, Humpback Whales, and Bryde’s Whales. From the cliffs, just a few meters from the shore, you can watch these whales frolic and play in the bay.
We offer the opportunity to book an exclusive land-based whale tour with local legend, photographer, and whale expert Dave De Beer. GETAWAY HUB
Hermanus, South Africa
The name Hermanus comes from a Dutch teacher named Hermanus Pieters (1778–1837), who arrived in Cape Town in 1815. He was recruited by Dutch-speaking farmers who were unhappy that English was the only language used in all government schools. He settled in what is now Caledon, but taught Dutch to farmers throughout the region. In his free time, Hermanus Pieters spent time at a freshwater spring by the sea, which he called “fontein.” There, he would fish and allow his sheep to graze. The spot later became known as “Hermanus Pieters se Fonteyn,” which is what we now call Hermanus. Hermanus Pieters passed away before the village of Hermanuspietersfontein came into existence. 65 years after his death, the then postmaster decided to shorten the village name from Hermanuspietersfontein to Hermanus, as he felt the original name was too long for the postal system.
